The world famous victory of 1967 over the self styled world champs was a Euro Qualifier that nicely set us up for a 1 -0 defeat courtesy of the genius of George Best, ask Janet, she was there! Needing a win in the last game against you know who we managed only a draw and from my viewpoint in the North enclosure big Yogi Hughes should have buried a late chance. That ensured our first section in glorious failure and was followed by a group including Portugal, Belgium and Denmark. Standing in the Celtic end I witnessed a 1 – 0 victory over the Danes courtesy of John O’Hare. Tommy Docherty’s first game in charge was a 2 – 1 win over the Portuguese with Bob Wilson winning his first cap. By the way Archie Gemmill played against Belgium away and we beat them at Pittodrie. We didn't qualify but it set us up for Germany 1974. Things were starting to look better!

Glorious failure in Germany saw us in good spirits for the next campaign and wee Billy Bremner scored first at home to Spain. Guess what! We missed a penalty and big McQueen missed a late headed chance and a 2 -1 home defeat. Joe Jordan scored in 2 mins in the return in Valencia and with Charlie Cook recalled a 1 – 1 draw was enough to keep us in with a chance. Another 1 – 1 draw in Rumania and 2 victories over past Danes was not enough and a drab 1 -1 draw, yes another, was only livened up by a scorching Bruce Rioch free kick.

Big Jock was on hand to rescue us from the calamity of Argentina and a 65,372 crowd witnessed his first game against Norway. Coming twice from behind Archie Gemmill scored the winner from a penalty. Austria had already inflicted a defeat in Vienna in a game which drew the curtain down on super Ally Macleod. A train journey from Frankfurt and I sat in the Estadio da Luz witnessing a 1 – 0 defeat that was not transmitted for TV courtesy of a TV strike. Things looked tough for Jock. Away stuffing of Norway 4 -0 followed by a crazy goal let in by Roughie and we need a win, any win. Belgium proving to be a thorn in our side defeated us home and away, a trip to Brussels for me clouded in alcohol. True to form we slaughtered Portugal 4 -1 when it didn’t matter, big Eck McLeish played his first game and went on to manage Motherwell.
