‘66
The film covers the story of a young London lad approaching his Bar mitzvah in the summer of 1966. Whilst not being a football fan the lad is smart enough to realise that the date chosen by his father has the potential to clash with the World Cup final held that year. His fears grow as England progress luckily through the rounds and his alarm reaches fever pitch the day of the Portugal semi final. His father, a less than successful businessman is determined that not only the day be a great success, but it also will launch his son on a path to success. One by one the guests and friends call off and even England’s jammy victory courtesy of an offside goal resulting in them reaching the final, does not prompt alarm within the confines of the insular family. On the eve of the final young Jack is walking through Hyde Park and meets a young Scotsman who comes up the ideal solution. The Bar mitzvah is relocated to Hampden Park on the day of the final and a world record crowd of 54,000 turn up!
