Scottish Fitba has had many great servants at all levels from those parents running Saturday morning teams through the junior ranks and up to the National team. Backroom staff with Scotland are often unsung but are invaluable nevertheless.
Jimmy Steele the Tic massuer so popular with the players that Souness tried to lure him to Ibrox. Where have we heard that story before?
There was the Englishman Alan Hodgkinson, the Goalie coach under Craig Brown whom I had the pleasure to meet on a train one day. He loved Scotland, the country, the team and especially us the fans. I told him I remembered him clapping us at half time in Wembley Euro '96 and him kicking a ball into the crowd. Perhaps things might have been different had he taken the penalty!
There are the players who represent their, our , country and we have all been at games where their appetite for success was a lot less than ours. Take the last 20 odd Hampden friendlies for instance.
And then there is Tommy Burns. He has served his country well in the last 5 years. He came to a WESTA meeting following the Faroes debacle. And he was a pleasure to listen to and was honest about Scotland and Scottish fitba.
He loyally stuck by Bertie and served under Walter when the tri-umverate management team regained the pride of Scotland. He was a candidate for the job and deserved a phone call. The SFA's mishandling of their jobseekers allowance has perhaps vindicated Walter as they have been implicated as a bad employer, and not for the first time.
Tommy has on more than one occasion spoken about the pleasure and pride of playing and 'managing' Scotland. His career high was coming on at Wembley '88, he gained a meagre 8 caps. A shame that in these days of famine we do not have a player of his artistry available.
I for one am a fan of Tommy Burns the man and Tommy Burns the Scotsman. Passion, committment and emotion. Just like us.
As for the SFA in this time of turmoil, shame.
