Minutes from WESTA monthly meeting – March 2005
Attendance: Jim Brown, Gerry Brady, Mark Adams, Hamish Husband, Tommy Madden, Glenn Hays and 41 others.
Apologies: Tam Coyle, Greg Fisher, Andrew Gibson.
JB said his hello’s to all in attendance and went through agenda of March meeting.
No Secretaries report. GH went through minutes from February meeting.
GB went through the Treasurers report for the last month.
GB stated that 54 members had so far paid up but urged those who haven’t yet done so to pay up as soon as possible. No changes within the clubs accounts apart from monies collected through the football card.
With Travel Convenor GF being absent, MA went through all travel details and updates on future arrangements being made.
A bus has now been booked for Riga for 25 members and 2 drivers. Neil Harper enquired at the cost of the bus per head? MA said that it worked out at £30 each.
MA also mentioned that we are looking into organising a bus from Ljubljana to Celje for Slovenia. Tommy Madden asked if MA would be looking for names just now for the bus. MA stated that the bus was an option at the moment and would update everyone in the near future.
Forthcoming Italy Game in Milan
JB went through details and information concerning the Italy game on March 26th. First of all, JB stated that the kick off time had moved forward 15 minutes due to the likelihood of multiple security checks taking place before entering the San Siro. JB requested that everyone going the game should get rid of any loose change, cigarette lighters etc as this will be taken off you be the local ‘polis’. Tickets have now been sent out to SSC members although for those that have not received theirs yet then tickets would be made available at the San Siro. Also, for those that have just re-joined then ‘an invitation’ to collect their ticket would be sent through so they would not miss out.
JB talked about Milan itself and where best to go. The Canal District was advised and MA stated that the majority would be gathering in the main square at the Duomo, however MA also advised that the bars there would be expensive and you would be best to venture to the back streets near by to get a cheaper pint.
GB went on to mention how to get out the San Siro and he said to expect delays in all transport. The walk back would be ‘hellish’ although transport should (?) be laid on for everyone to get back into the city centre.
Following on further discussions regarding the ticket ‘fiasco’ MA stated that the tickets should now have been sent out and that the continuing problems with the SSC are a down to a resource issue and not to complain direct to either Alison or Angela. JB asked the members present for their thoughts on the recent change/renewal of the supporters club. Replies from the floor indicated that it was poorly organised (again this was down the resource issue) and that the information included in the pack wasn’t that great, particularly sending out the wrong t-shirt sizes. However, on a more positive note, the easily-folding handy-sized information card for getting about Milan, to the game and how to apologise for you crazy pal being drunk was well received by all.
AOB
It was mentioned at the start of the meeting that a member from the Polish Tartan Army would possibly be present at our meeting tonight. JB asked the floor if he was in the room but had no response back. It was though that he was still wandering the streets of Glasgow.
It was requested that any questions for TC to take to the ATAC meeting on April 12th should be given to the committee before the end of the meeting. None were put forward.
Tommy Madden asked if Hampden could be made available for WESTA to hold any functions that are being organised for this year. JB stated that there are functions suites for hiring but obviously this would be at a cost! And on a similar subject, GB mentioned that he would be having a meeting with the new manager of the Albany Hotel in Glasgow to see what could be offered to WESTA for any future functions. GB would update everyone as and when the meeting takes place.
MA discussed how his charity run had gone that day. MA’s time was a respectable 1 hour 44 minutes and 4 seconds, helping to raise over £300 in the process for the Greenfield Primary School. Well received by all.
WESTA Fitba’ Team
GH went through the up and coming match with Preston pans TA on April 3rd, requesting that any players present or members wishing to go should speak to him at the end of the meeting. GH also went through the date arranged for the annual TA 7’S tournament which has been set for July 9th. This wasn’t the usual time set for the tournament and this may cause problems when it comes to sending our strongest team through with a few players already booked up for holidays.
Future Business
MA discussed Football Aid who are organising a charity fund-raising game at Hampden Park this June. Several Tartan Army foot soldiers took part in last year's event and spoke very highly about having the chance to grace the hallowed turf. MA had said that details have been posted onto the WESTA website.
JB finished off the meeting by reminding everyone of next months meeting with our guest speaker, ex-Celtic and Scotland legend, Billy McNeil. JB also put it to the members that since it was their club if the had any ideas they would like to have at each meeting or any social events they would like arranged during the year. Suggestions thrown back included an agenda sent out to the members prior to the meeting, a quiz night (possibility at May meeting), a formal evening, a race night and a film night that could show games of the past with a guest speaker from the game to chat about it to the members. JB thanked everyone for their input.
Next meeting is arranged for Sunday 24th April at 7.30pm.
